General Information
The Furies were formed in 2003 as a team of experienced women softball players who are interested in playing women's fastpitch softball in the Northern Virginia area as part of the Fairfax County Women's Fastpitch League (FCWFL). The FCWFL season generally runs from the first week of June through the first week in August. All players must be women aged 18 or older. The Furies are not a traveling or tournament team.
History
In Greek and Roman religion and mythology, the Furies or Erinyes were three daughters of Gaia, conceived from the blood of Uranus.
They were powerful underworld goddesses of vengeance and retribution that personified conscience and punished the crimes against the family,
particularly the crimes of children against their parents. They were usually depicted as fierce-looking winged women with serpents for hair and armed with vicious serpents and whips.
Their names were Megaera (jealous), Alector (unceasing in pursuit), and Tisiphone (blood avenger).
Those that the Furies sought to punish they pursued and hounded relentlessly until they died in a 'furor' of madness, torment, and despair for their crimes, or until they were cleansed of their sins through ritual purification.
